The Northern Rhone is the site of the world's finest Syrah, even if some of our friends down unda' beg to differ. This wine, from the esteemed vineyard, "Les Chassis" is a luxurious encapsulation of what the region does best. Presenting a nose that's both overtly fruity, with notes of farmers' market blueberries and ripe bing cherries, there is also a compelling earthen element that shows bacon fat, mushroom, and even a bit of fur. The palate is a veritable blockbuster, with the same fruit present, long, supple tannins, and a lengthy, food-friendly finish that asserts it will be remembered.

There's nothing better with Syrah than foods that have some smoke on them. Anything pork that comes off the grill like a picnic shoulder, or ribs will be sublime, or more earthy delights like roasted mushrooms, or chicken liver mouse are pitch-perfect.
